Sustainability

Balancing conservation with sustainable development

Our Approach

Sustainability & Livelihoods

Conservation that supports community well-being

Effective conservation requires addressing the interconnections between biodiversity protection and human livelihoods. Communities living within and around ecosystems often depend directly on natural resources for their survival and economic well-being. At the Species Conservation Centre, we recognize that sustainable conservation must create tangible benefits for people while protecting nature.

Our sustainability initiatives focus on developing and promoting conservation-compatible livelihoods that reduce pressure on ecosystems while generating income for communities. This includes supporting sustainable agriculture, eco-tourism, sustainable harvesting of forest products, and value-added processing of natural materials. We work to strengthen market linkages and capacity, ensuring communities can capture fair value from sustainable resource use.

We also prioritize environmental education and awareness to build broad-based support for conservation. By demonstrating how healthy ecosystems provide essential services that support agriculture, water supply, climate regulation, and cultural practices, we foster a shared commitment to environmental stewardship that benefits both conservation and community resilience.
